Big names at Memorial Tournament

Each year, Folds of Honor hosts one of the biggest gala events and golf tournaments in the area, known as The Patriot Cup Invitational. The annual fundraiser is held during Memorial Day weekend at the Patriot Golf Club in Owasso.

Folds of Honor is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen or disabled service members. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Fold of Honor has consistently returned 80 percent of every dollar raised to the scholarship program. Last year, Folds of Honor awarded over 2,800 scholarships, and since 2007 more than 12,000 educational scholarships have been awarded. Scholarship are awarded up to $5,000.

The Patriot Cup Invitational is a weekend golf tournament and national gala celebrating our nation’s heroes. Following the Invitational, Folds of Honor will host The Patriot Cup, an exclusive, invitation-only golf tournament contested at The Patriot Golf Club. This year’s National Gala entertainment will be a concert by country music star Phil Vassar.

The annual patriotic event is well attended by several players from the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions, military golfers from across the country and many celebrities, to create an unforgettable experience for the families of fallen and disabled service members.

This event is also one of the area’s best-kept secrets. The weekend golf tournament is open to those who are donors and sponsors, and military families. The Memorial Day Patriot Cup golf outing is by invitation only. What few tickets that are available are often sold well in advance of the event. Usually, the list of celebrities who will take part in the Patriot Cup is not released to the media until just a few days before the event. Those that have participated in the past include Kid Rock, Larry The Cable Guy, Craig T. Nelson, Nancy Lopez and Tom Lehman.

As a reporter, I’m looking forward to attending the event with the hopes of getting several interviews with the professional golfers and celebrities that will be participating, and then use those interviews in this column in the near future. Stay tuned.
