Editorial: Blanket amnesty for Mrs. Clinton?

The Rev. Jesse Jackson wants President Barack Hussein Obama to pardon Hillary Clinton before he leaves office in January.

In a speech in Michigan, Jackson called on Obama to grant a “blanket pardon” for Mrs. Clinton, similar to what former President Gerald Ford did for former President Richard Nixon.

Nixon resigned after the Watergate scandal and Ford, the vice president who took his place, pardoned Nixon to avoid a contentious trial. Historians point to this pardon as a big reason that Ford lost to Democrat Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Now, Jackson wouldn’t admit that Clinton did anything wrong but he doesn’t want her put on trial and put behind bars.

“It would be a monumental moral mistake to pursue the indictment of Hillary Clinton,” said Jackson. He said issuing the pardon could help heal the nation, like Ford’s pardon of Nixon did.

Mrs. Clinton has been the subject of an FBI investigation because of her handing of top-secret documents while she was secretary of state. The actions of the Clinton Family Foundation and its interactions with foreign governments have also been part of the criminal investigation.

The FBI has not recommended criminal charges against her – yet. President-elect Donald Trump condemned her use of a private email server and how it exposed classified documents to scrutiny by America’s enemies. In a debate, Trump said Mrs. Clinton should be in jail for what she did.

A blanket pardon by Obama even before any charges are filed would be a blatant abuse of the pardon privilege. Bill Clinton was guilty of a large group of questionable pardons just before he left office.

The truth needs to come out and if Mrs. Clinton needs help staying out of jail, that should be a decision by Trump, not Jesse Jackson.
