Editorial: Congratulations to OU basketball

Congratulations to the Oklahoma basketball team for a great season.

When OU hired Coach Lon Kruger five years ago, the program was in shambles and losing games it should have won.

Kruger steadily rebuilt Sooner basketball until now it is one of the best programs in the country.

And Kruger does things the right way. He doesn’t cheat or cut corners. Unlike so many coaches, he doesn’t scream at or belittle his players. Kruger is a mentor and, to some extent, a father figure to his players.

It’s easy to see that he cares for the welfare of his players.

Kruger is gracious in victory or defeat.

This season has been a giant plus for OU and the State of Oklahoma in terms of national recognition and public relations.

Buddy Hield is the best player in America and he is an outstanding spokesman for the Oklahoma University. Following a triple overtime loss to No. 1 Kansas, the Jayhawk fans gave Hield a standing ovation for his remarkable performance.

Hield is a great example of how Kruger recruits somewhat overlooked talent and develops them to their highest potential.

Tulsa’s basketball program is getting better under Frank Heath and Oklahoma State fans are optimistic about new Coach Brad Underwood.

Kruger, Hield and the rest of the Sooners had a great year and they will go down in the history books as one of the best Sooner teams ever.
