Cowboys open with Missouri State

After winning the Big 12 baseball championship, No. 3 seeded Oklahoma State (30-25) will play No. 2 seeded Missouri State (40-17) at 2 p.m. Friday in the NCAA Regional at nearby Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The four-team double elimination tournament includes No. 4 seeded Oral Roberts (42-14), champions of the Summit League, and host Arkansas (42-17), a No. 1 seed. ORU plays Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday.

Saturday’s games will be at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday games will be at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. If necessary, a Monday game will be played at 6 p.m.

Oklahoma State captured the Big 12 Baseball Championship crown for the second time in program history Sunday with a 6-5 win over Texas in the title game at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player Garrett McCain had another big day for the Cowboys to lead OSU over Texas as the junior outfielder went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. He is the first player in OSU history to win the Big 12 tourney’s MOP award.

OSU also became the first No. 8 seed in Big 12 history to win the conference tourney. OSU’s other previous Big 12 Championship tournament title came in 2004.

It was the 200th career win for Coach Josh Holliday.

OSU will be making the 43rd NCAA Regional appearance in program history.

“We feel real good about how we’re playing, and we know this time of year you have to go on the road and beat quality teams if you want to advance and we’re looking forward to that opportunity,” said Holliday. “To watch these kids and what they’ve done in the last two weeks is probably the most rewarding and educational thing as a coach that I’ve ever been a part of and witnessed – just absolutely amazing…

“We’re savoring this and thrilled that we get to play together, and we get to go to a regional close enough to continue to share it with the people that have been by our side. Hopefully we get some fans over there and continue to cheer these kids on because they deserve it.”
