Letter to the editor: Evil in the World

What would possess a 64-year-old man to methodically plan and execute a murderous shooting rampage on 22,000 people that he doesn’t even know?  This savage “sneak” attack left at least 59 dead and more than 500 injured; many of whom are in critical condition.

There is still much to learn about this murderer, Stephen Paddock.  News reports indicate that he was a millionaire who frequently gambled.  Reportedly he was a retired, twice-divorced accountant and real estate investor who owned apartments, houses and several properties in the Reno area.  He also owned two homes, one in Mesquite, Nevada and the other in Reno.  He had no known children, but he did have a girlfriend.

From all the outward signs, the casual observer would perceive Stephen Paddock to be a very successful person.  But the human eye cannot discern what is going on inside a person’s mind, nor can any human being know the evilness lurking in another person’s heart.

But one thing we know for certain.  The source of all evil is the devil himself.  The Holy Bible says, “Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

In today’s world we have devalued the life of human beings.  The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) spends millions of dollars on television commercials soliciting donations to help save the animals.  And yet commercials to save babies from being aborted are almost nonexistent.

In the United States, we willfully murder an unborn child every 32 seconds and we call it “healthcare for women.”  And there are no TV commercials featuring weepy-eyed Hollywood actors soliciting donations to save the babies.  Why?  Because we don’t want to infringe upon a woman’s right to choose.

In today’s world we demean law-enforcement officers and glorify the lawbreakers. Rap artists make millions of dollars from hip hop music that reflects the violent lifestyles of inner-city youth and glamorizes the “Gangsta Lifestyle.”  In addition, violent video games have desensitized the killing process.

Justice is no longer swift.  As a result, there is no sense of immediate punishment for persons who break the law.  The death penalty has been eliminated in 31 states, and the appeal process for persons convicted of the most heinous crimes can go on for 10 to 20 years.  And free legal representation is provided (by U.S. taxpayers) even when the person publically admits they are guilty!

Also, in the interest of “social justice” the penalties for breaking the law are being reduced; and convicted criminals are being released from prison because of overcrowding.

What’s going on?  This is a spiritual battle.  We are under demonic attack and we must get right with God.  The Holy Bible tells us: “The devil is a murderer, a liar and the father of lies . . . But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one . . . Submit yourselves, then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”  (See John 8:44; 2 Thessalonians 3:3; James 4:7 NIV)
