Florida plays, OU; OSU hosts Ark. in Big 12/SEC

Florida will play Oklahoma in Norman and Arkansas will travel to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State in the 2017 Big 12/Southeastern Conference Challenge.

Both basketball games will be on Jan. 28.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise every contest of the fourth annual event matching every Big 12 squad with 10 members from the SEC. Each league will host five games. In addition, ESPN’s College GameDay will originate from a to be determined site of one of the day’s games.

The Sooners are 0-1 all-time against the Gators. The lone matchup came during the 1995-96 season, when then-head coach Lon Kruger led Florida to a 76-72 overtime win over Oklahoma in the All-College Tournament in Oklahoma City.

OU is coming off a 29-8 season (sixth-most wins in program history) in which it advanced to the school’s fifth Final Four. Two starters – Khadeem Lattin and Jordan Woodard – will return for the Sooners in 2016-17.

Last season, Florida posted a 21-15 overall record and was 9-9 in SEC play. The Gators, who were led by first-year head coach Mike White, participated in the National Invitation Tournament, winning two games over North Florida and Ohio State before dropping a quarterfinals matchup against George Washington.

Oklahoma is 3-0 all-time in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge event, with victories against Texas A&M, Missouri and LSU in 2014, 2015 and 2016, respectively. The Big 12 is 20-10 (.667) in the Challenge, having won the series in each of its first three seasons.

The Challenge has six teams ranked in the super-early ESPN.com top 25, including four Big 12 teams – No. 3 Kentucky, No. 4 Kansas, No. 15 West Virginia, No. 18 Oklahoma, No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 22 Iowa State. Two games will pit ranked squads against each other – Kansas at Kentucky and Texas A&M at West Virginia.

Arkansas will return to Gallagher-Iba Arena to face the Oklahoma State basketball team for the first time since 2002.

The two programs are separated by less than 180 miles, but have not met on the hardwood since Dec. 20, 2003 (73-58 OSU win in Fayetteville). The Cowboys have won nine of the last 10 meetings against the Razorbacks, and lead the series, 36-14, overall, including a 12-1 edge inside historic GIA.

OSU is 2-1 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, including a 79-52 win over South Carolina in 2013-14 in its lone home contest in the Challenge. Last season, the Cowboys went to Auburn and won, 74-63, thanks to 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Jawun Evans.

The Big 12 is 20-10 (.667) in the Challenge, having won the series in each of its first three seasons. The Big 12 has posted a 48-30 (.615) record in the last two conference challenge series it has played (vs. Pac-10, SEC) dating back to 2007.

On top of Evans, new Cowboy head coach Brad Underwood will have the services of All-Big 12 guard Phil Forte, junior wings Jeffrey Carroll and Tavarius Shine, as well as forwards Leyton Hammonds and Mitchell Solomon.
