Senators James Lankford, R-Oklahoma; Joni Ernst, R-Iowa; and Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, introduced a new bill to defund Planned Parenthood and redirect its taxpayer funding to other entities that provide women’s health care services, including community health centers.
Lankford, Ernst and Paul led a working group for this bill (S.1881), which had support from Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, and the majority of the Republican Conference. The bill needed 60 votes but got only 53 out of 100 in the Senate last week.
Inhofe has introduced a bill demanding an investigation of Planned Parenthood. He said, “Our nation should not be condoning the act of killing our own children or allowing these corrupt organizations to sell body parts for profit. This isn’t about being Pro-Life or Pro-Choice anymore, this is about our country’s moral conscience, and I will not stand for such horrid actions like this taking place on American soil.”
“The difficult thing about this issue is, it’s incredibly difficult to talk about,” Lankford said. “It’s incredibly difficult to process. Anyone who has seen the images, your first response is incredible compassion for the people that are in this journey.”
A series of undercover videos have been released that show high ranking officials from Planned Parenthood discussing the sale of body parts from aborted unborn babies.
“There are moms that came to a Planned Parenthood and were told that they were just having a medical operation…and were asked to consent, and now they are seeing the other side of that consent,” Lankford said. “They’re seeing what happened behind the curtain, basically.
“When the child that was taken out of them was dismembered and sold for parts and it’s incredibly difficult, I’m sure for them, as it is for the entire nation. So we have incredible compassion for them for what’s going on.”
Even though the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion, it is against federal law to sell body parts. The U.S. Justice Department, under the direction of the pro-abortion Obama Administration, has declined to investigate or prosecute Planned Parenthood for the illegal activity demonstrated in the videos.
“I feel it’s incredibly important that we raise the issue, and that we address this immediately, and that we continue to provide funding for women’s health, but we don’t continue to provide funding for an organization that makes part of their money off the death of that child, and then part of the money off the sale of the parts of that child to different research facilities,” Lankford said. “To watch the video, and to see literally the haggling over the price of body parts as if it was a T-shirt at a garage sale, haggling, is really difficult for any of us to understand just the basic humanity of that. So this is an appropriate step to continue to protect women’s health and we’re looking forward to getting the chance to take this on and continue to deal with this issue in the days ahead.”
Since the Planned Parenthood videos were released online, many different pieces of legislation have been introduced in Congress to defund, investigate, or restrict Planned Parenthood.
“Specifically, this new bill would prohibit federal funding of Planned Parenthood Federation of America or any of its affiliate organizations; protect federal funding for health services for women, including diagnostic laboratory and radiology services, well-child care, prenatal and postnatal care, immunizations, cervical and breast cancer screenings and more; and ensure there is no reduction in overall federal funding available to support women’s health,” Lankford said.
On July 16, Lankford became the first senator to deliver a speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate about the recent videos revealing Planned Parenthood’s practice of harvesting human body parts from abortions.
“The appalling videos showing senior Planned Parenthood officials cavalierly discussing the harvesting and trafficking of organs of babies they kill are utterly abhorrent,” said Tony Lauinger of Oklahomans for Life. “They expose the hideous reality of the Planned Parenthood abortion culture.
“Any caring American who has seen the videos is aghast at the callous, cold-blooded, inhumane attitudes displayed by the various Planned Parenthood abortionists as they discuss the prices for babies’ organs. They describe how, guided by ultrasound, they can see just where to employ their killing tools.”
Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s Senior Director of Medical Services described like this: “You try to intentionally go above and below the thorax so that, you know – we’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that – so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”
Another abortionist, the President of Planned Parenthood’s Council of Medical Directors, explained how her abortionists are able to use “a less crunchy technique to get whole specimens.” The baby is an afterthought; they just want to make sure that, in crushing and tearing the living unborn child apart, they don’t damage the organs they will harvest and make available for a price.
“Redefining terms to smooth the way for eliminating unwanted human beings is a shameless, age-old tactic,” Lauinger said. “For the abortion industry, describing their grisly, bloody profiteering and harvesting of baby organs as ‘health care’ is the ultimate desecration of both our humanity and our language.
“Planned Parenthood runs the biggest chain of abortion mills in the country, accounting for a death toll of one-third of a million unborn babies killed per year. Abortions provide more than half of their annual nongovernment ‘health-services’ revenue, and abortions constitute over 90 percent of their ‘pregnancy services.’”
Currently, more than half a billion dollars of taxpayer money goes annually to Planned Parenthood.
The Oklahoma Legislature passed the Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act, HB 1721. Dismemberment abortion, which is crushing, ripping, tearing a living unborn child to pieces – is the abortion method used by Planned Parenthood in harvesting baby organs.
Planned Parenthood has hired a public relations firm to deal with its crisis and has a temporary website up after it shut down its normal site (plannedparenthood.org).
