Editorial: Michigan law protects young girls

The Michigan Senate has approved make a common Muslim practice a felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Genital mutilation of girls is will soon be illegal in Michigan.

You won’t read about this in liberal news media because it contradicts the politically correct mantra that Islam is a peaceful religion and that it doesn’t mistreat women.

The bill was introduced after an emergency room doctor was charged under federal law after he performed genital mutilation on two 7-year-old girls in suburban Detroit. Another doctor and his wife who ran the clinic were also charged.

Genital mutilation of girls, (typically involving removal of all or part of the clitoris), is forbidden by many international treaties but it is still a common religious practice in some Muslim countries, including Somalia, Sudan and Egypt.

State Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Rick Jones, said Michigan is a “hotspot” for genital mutilation due to its large community of immigrants from countries where such surgery is still routinely performed. Many are Muslim.

“It’s been hidden. But now that we’re aware, we want to make a very strong statement to the world – never again in Michigan,” he said.

The Michigan law has more teeth than the federal law. It would close a federal loophole by outlawing transportation of girls under age 18 within state boundaries for purposes of undergoing genital surgery. Parents who take children to Michigan from abroad or are found to have taken them overseas for such procedures could be charged.

Texas may pass a similar law. The World Health Organization estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone genital mutilation, which can cause lasting health problems.

Someone needs to tell the liberal media.
