After feedback from affected families, 6th grade students will remain at six South Tulsa elementary schools.
Tulsa Public Schools had proposed moving the 6th grade out of Grimes, Grissom, Key, Marshall, McClure and Salk elementary schools and into Memorial Junior High School beginning in the fall of 2016, a move which would have affected current 5th graders at those schools.
“Several weeks ago we held a community forum to discuss the possibility of moving our 6th grade students from these six elementary schools into Memorial Junior High School,” said TPS Superintendent Deborah A. Gist. “We had a great turnout at the meeting, and we appreciate having the opportunity to hear from parents and teachers. I want you to know that we heard your feedback and are using it to ensure that we are making the very best decisions for our students. We heard feedback about the importance of supporting our 6th graders in a nurturing environment. We also heard the need for parents and teachers to see the value offered by a move to the junior high school.”
As a result, the district has made the decision not to move the 6th grade students into Memorial Junior High at this time.
