No override of bill to stop abortion in Oklahoma

Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate prevented an override of Gov. Mary Fallin’s veto of SB 1552, which would have made abortion a felony and would cost any doctor who performed an abortion his state license.

The bill was authored by Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow, and Rep. David Brumbaugh, R-Broken Arrow.

Fallin ran for governor twice claiming to be “pro-life.” Republican senators conveniently were able to vote for the measure and then behind closed doors maneuver to prevent an override of her veto.

Dahm said that the states – not the federal government – have the right to issue medical licenses. His bill was supported by Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt.

The bill would have stopped construction of a new abortion clinic in Oklahoma. It will be the first new abortion clinic in the state since 1974.
