Letter to the editor: Pope didn’t quote the whole passage

As his charter plane left Columbia on Sunday and flew over some of the hurricane devastated areas, Pope Francis was asked about “man-made climate change.”  He sharply criticized climate change doubters, and said, “Those who deny this must go to the scientists and ask them.  They speak very clearly.”  Francis said scientists have also clearly charted what needed to be done to reverse course on global warming and said individuals and politicians had a “moral responsibility” to do their part.

Pope Francis continued, “These aren’t opinions pulled out of thin air.  They are very clear.  Then they [leaders] decide and history will judge those decisions.  When asked about those who have denied climate change, or delayed actions to counter it, he responded with an Old Testament saying: ‘Man is stupid.’”

During his visit to Columbia, Pope Francis spoke out frequently about the need to preserve the country’s rich biodiversity from overdevelopment and exploitation by multinationals trying to exploit natural resources.

Apparently Pope Francis was referring to Jeremiah 10:14 from the New American Standard Bible (NASB), which says, “Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge . . .”  However, if Pope Francis had read verses 10 through 15, perhaps even he too would have better understood that God controls the weather . . . not man.

Here’s what the full scripture says:  “But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.  At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.  Thus you shall say to them, “the gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.

“It is He who made the earth by His power, Who established the world by His wisdom; and by His understanding He has stretched out the heavens.  When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, And brings out the wind from His storehouses.

“Every man is stupid, devoid of knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols; for his molten images are deceitful, and there is no breath in them. They are worthless, a work of mockery; in the time of their punishment they will perish.”

I believe this scripture also applies to man’s computer-generated models, which have lead “scientists” to believe that climate change is manmade.  And let us not overlook the fact that Pope Francis is also just a man.
