Science Education Act advances

A bill to guarantee open discussion in Oklahoma public schools is advancing through the Legislature.

Some public school districts have discouraged discussion of the various theories on the origins of man and dogmatically taught the theory of evolution as the truth. The Oklahoma Science Education Act prohibits the Oklahoma Department of Education or any school board, district superintendent or principal from barring any teacher from helping students in an objective manner to understand, analyze, critique and review existing scientific theories.

Senate Bill 393 by Sen. Josh Brecheen, R-Coalgate; and Rep. David Brumbaugh, R-Broken Arrow, was approved by the Senate 34-10.
