Tough road games await OU, OSU, TU

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa will face some of their toughest games on the road this football season.

On top of the list will be the Sooners’ trip to Columbus, Ohio, on September 9 to face Ohio State in a battle of what should be two Top 10 or even Top 5 teams. Additionally, it will be the second game for new head coach Lincoln Riley and his first road trip as the top man at OU.

Oklahoma has a brutal road schedule. The Sooners must travel to Stillwater on November 4 for what many believe will be a preview of the re-instituted Big 12 Championship game. For the first time in more than a dozen years, the Cowboys will have an edge in experience between the two head coaches.

Another road trip that could derail the Sooners is the annual showdown with Texas in Dallas on October 14. New Texas head coach Tom Herman was coach at Houston last season when the Cougars upset Oklahoma in Houston. Herman inherited a talented team that many are predicting will challenge for the conference title.

Two weeks after Ohio State, Oklahoma must travel to Baylor – a place where it has been hard for the Sooners to prevail lately. The October 21 trip to Kansas State will match a rookie head coach against one of the most seasoned and successful coaches in the nation, Bill Snyder.

The only cupcake on the away schedule for Oklahoma is the November 18 trip to Lawrence, Kansas, to play the Jayhawks.

Conversely, OU has three easy games and three tough contests on their home schedule. Riley’s first game is against UTEP on September 2 and then two weeks later, Tulane comes to Norman. Iowa State comes to OU on October 7.

The last three home games are the toughest. Riley will face his alma mater, Texas Tech, on October 28. A key matchup with TCU is in Norman on November 11. And OU could have a shootout with West Virginia on November 25 and that could also be a preview of the Big 12 title game.

OSU has mostly a balance with their home-and-away schedule. The Cowboys open in-state rival Tulsa on September 2 and then they have two road games – South Alabama on September 9 and Pittsburgh on September 16. The Cowboys should be favored in both games but you never know what might happen on the road.

The OSU game at Texas Tech on September 30 probably will be a shootout. The Cowboys have dominated Texas in recent years but the Longhorn will be better this season, especially at home on October 21.

A week after playing Texas on the road, OSU must travel to West Virginia on October 28 in what figures to be another high-scoring game. The last road game is November 11 at Iowa State – a road game the OSU coaches will never discount after a famous upset in 2011.

The TCU game at OSU could be between the two best teams in the Big 12. Baylor might be back to championship form and they come to Stillwater on October 14.

Again, the Bedlam game has decided the Big 12 title the past two years and OSU has the advantage of playing at home with a seasoned head coach.

Kansas State will challenge the Pokes on November 18 and then the Cowboys should be heavily favored against Kansas in Stillwater on November 25.

Tulsa opens the season on September 2 with a road trip to Oklahoma State  – a team that could be ranked in the Top 10.

It gets a bunch easier for the Golden Hurricane with road trips to Toledo (September 16) and Tulane (October 7). The competition gets tougher after that with back-to-back road games at Connecticut (October 21) and SMU (October 27). The final TU road game is November 18 at South Florida.

At home, Tulsa should please season ticket holders with games against Navy (September 30), Houston (October 14), Memphis (November 3) and Temple (November 25).

The lighter home slate includes the home opener against Louisiana (September 9) and New Mexico on September 23.

The marquis home games for Arkansas are TCU (September 9), Texas A&M (September 23), Auburn (October 21), Mississippi State (November 18) and Missouri (November 25).

The Razorbacks have to play South Carolina, Alabama and LSU on the road.
