TU spring drills

The University of Tulsa football squad will get an earlier start to spring practice this year when the Golden Hurricane takes the practice field on March 1 for the first of 15 spring practice dates.

In his first year as head coach, Philip Montgomery led Tulsa to a six-win season and an appearance in the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl.

“We’re excited to get back on the field with our players,” said Montgomery. “Obviously, it’s not that long ago that we were on the field with our bowl preparations and game. We’re looking forward to building on what this team accomplished in 2015, and improving on both sides of the ball.”

The first seven days of 15 spring practice dates will take place before spring break for Tulsa. The normal weekly schedule will have Tulsa practicing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, but for the second week (March 7-11), the Hurricane will practice on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday before taking off a full week for Spring Break (March 12-19).

“We have a good foundation of what we want to do and how we want to do it. You’re always going to strive to get faster and create new ideas and new scenarios. Spring is a great time for us to continue to grow and be innovative in what we do. It’s a time for teams to find and, hopefully, create your identity for what it will be for the next year,” said Montgomery. Tulsa will go into spring practice with 51 returning letterwinners and will have to replace 20 seniors.

“We lost a great group of seniors so we have to find those leaders who will step up. We have a number of young guys who will get a lot of reps in the spring, whether they red-shirted or played sparingly last year,” said Montgomery. “I’m excited for our coaches, as we have a couple ofnew ones, to continue to grow and get better as a staff and as a football team. Spring ball is when you start that process. I’m excited.”

When Tulsa returns from spring break, Hurricane practice sessions will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tulsa returns to the practice field on March 22 and will conclude spring drills on April 2 with the Annual Spring Game. Time for the Spring Game has not yet been determined.

Normal weekday practices will take place in the afternoon with Saturday sessions in the morning. Selected practice sessions will be open to the public.

Tulsa Pro Day is scheduled for March 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
