Candidates for federal, state and county offices in the Tulsa area filed last week despite limitations due to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.
- In Senate District 37, Sen. Allison Ikley-Freeman – a Democrat married to another woman – has two Republican challengers – Cody Rogers and Chris Emerson.
- Three Tulsa area senators were re-elected because no one else filed. Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow; Sen. Joe Newhouse, R-Broken Arrow; and Sen. Kevin Matthews, D-Tulsa, each won new four-year terms. This is the first time Dahm and Newhouse have not drawn opponents.
- In State Senate District 35 – an open seat in Tulsa – three Republicans and three Democrats filed. The Republicans are Cheryl Baber, Kyden Creekpaum and former District Court Judge Linda Morrissey and the Democrats are Carly Hotvedt, Jo Anna Dossett and Stan Allen Young.
- Sen. Dave Rader, R-Tulsa, will go against Democrat Shawna Mott-Wright in District 39.
- Several state representatives from the Tulsa Metro area were re-elected because no one else filed.
The Republicans were Rep. Tom Gann (District 8), Rep. Jeff Boatman (District 67); Rep. T.J. Marti (District 75); Rep. Ross Ford (District 76); Rep. Stan May (District 80); and Rep. Dean Fenton Davis (District 98). The Democrats included Rep. Regina Goodwin (District 73) and Rep. John Waldron (District 77). - U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, one of the most powerful senators in Congress, drew three Republican challengers: J.J. Stitt of Kingfisher; John Hopkins of Oklahoma City and Tulsan Neil Mavis.
Four Democrats – Sheila Bilyeu, Freedom; Abby Broyles, Oklahoma City; Elysabeth Britt, Oklahoma City; and R.O. Joe Cassity, Jr., Ponca City filed against Inhofe plus Libertarian Robert Murphy of Norman. - Tulsa County District 2 Commissioner Karen Keith, a Democrat, drew two Republican challengers, Eddy Barclay of Tulsa and Josh Turley of Sand Springs.
- Tulsa County Court Clerk Don Newberry will face fellow Republican Ron Phillips in the June 30 primary.
- Tulsa County Sheriff Vic Regalado and Tulsa County Clerk Michael Willis did not draw opponents and are re-elected. Both will get a second term.
- U.S. Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Oklahoma, did not draw a GOP challenger but two Tulsa Democrats: Kojo Asamoa-Caesar and Mark A. Keeter filed. Perennial candidate Evelyn L. Rogers of Tulsa filed as an independent.
- The most hotly contest congressional race is in District 5 in a seat held by Democrat Rep. Kendra Horn (the only Oklahoman to vote to impeach President Trump.) She is being challenged by Democrat Tom Guild of Edmond and nine Republicans: Janet Barresi, Oklahoma City; Charles Tuffy Pringle, McLoud; David Hill, Edmond; Terry Neese, Oklahoma City; Michael Ballard, Tecumseh; Miles Rahimi, Edmond; Shelli Landon, Tulsa; Stephanie Bice, Edmond; and Jake Merrick, Yukon.
- U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin, R-Oklahoma, is being challenged by State Sen. Joseph Silk, Watson, and Rhonda Hopkins of Rose. The Democrat in that 2nd District race is Danyell Lanier of Hugo and the Libertarian is Richie Castaldao of Afton.
- In District 3, it’s U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Oklahoma, against Democrat Zoe Medyett of Wellston.
- In District 4, U.S. Rep. Tom Cole faces fellow Republicans: James Taylor, Norman; Trevor Sipes, Moore; and Gilbert Sanders, Choctaw. The Democrats are Mary Brannon, Washington; John D. Argo, Norman; and David R. Slemmons, Norman. Bob White of Norman is the Libertarian candidate.
- Oklahoma Corporation Commissioner Todd Hiett, R-Kellyville, will face Harold Spradling of Cherokee in the GOP primary June 30. The Libertarian candidate is Todd Hagopian of Bixby.
The primary election is June 30 with a runoff on August 25 and the general election is November 3.
