News and notes from around the sports world…
Vicky McIntyre made history last year as she became the first Oral Roberts women’s basketball player drafted in the WNBA, and now she has signed a training camp contract with the San Antonio Stars.
The former All-American was selected 20th overall by the Seattle Storm in the 2015 WNBA Draft which also made her the highest Summit League player to ever be drafted. However, McIntyre was released by the Storm before the season began. She then went to China and played a portion of the 2015-16 season in the top Chinese professional league with Heilongjiang Shenda.
McIntyre joined the Stars in San Antonio for training camp last week in preparation for the 2016 WNBA season. San Antonio opened the preseason with a pair of games earlier this week against the Atlanta Dream and Connecticut Sun in Connecticut.
The Omaha native finished her career with the Golden Eagles, in 2015, after breaking the ORU and Summit League blocks and rebound records for a single-season. She also finished the season just four rebounds shy of the NCAA single-season rebound record.
NCAA TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The University of Tulsa and the Tulsa Sports Commission will host the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, May 19-30, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the TU campus.
I’ll admit, I’m not a huge tennis fan, but I enjoy watching quality tennis played at a high level. Tulsa hosted the NCAA Tennis Championships in 2004 (men’s only) and 2008 (men’s and women’s), and both times I enjoyed going out to the Case Tennis Center and watching these top-notch college players compete against each other. Besides, it’s a great way to spend a warm spring afternoon.
Teams to watch include the Oklahoma Sooners men’s team, which finished as runners-up the past two years, and is currently ranked No. 10. Virginia (No. 1), UCLA (No. 2), and North Carolina (No. 3) are always strong on the men’s side.
The UCLA women’s team is also one of the perennial favorites, however, this is a down year for the program and the team is currently ranked 25th in the country. The top ranked teams, as of this writing, are Florida, California, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio State. The Oklahoma State women’s team is ranked No. 15. OU is not in the top-25.
SUMMIT BASEBALL TOURNEY
ORU will be hosting the Summit League Baseball Tournament at J.L. Johnson Stadium, May 25 – 28.
The Golden Eagles currently sit atop the conference standings (15-6), and should hold on to the No. 1 seed going into the tournament on their home field later this month.
ECHL PLAYOFF UPDATE
The two teams in the ECHL Central Division that finished ahead of the Tulsa Oilers and made the playoffs are now squaring off against each other in the second round.
Missouri finished the regular season with the best record in the ECHL, and they quickly dispensed of the Quad City Mallards, who knocked the Oilers out of playoff contention in the final week of the season. The Mavericks swept the Mallards, 4-0.
The Allen Americans finished in second place in the division and got past Idaho in a seven game series, 4-3. As of this writing, the Americans and Mavericks were tied one game apiece in round two. Allen is the defending ECHL Champions. The other round two matchups are; Fort Wayne vs. Utah, Reading vs. Wheeling, and South Carolina vs. Adirondack.
