Eight candidates will be on the ballot on February 12 for the District 1 in the Tulsa Public Schools and two for District 2. The primary election is February 12 and the general election is April 2.

Board member Gary Perceful is not seeking re-election, so that is an open seat. The candidates who filed for District 1 were: Nicole Nixon, Stacey Woolley, Kyle R. Wagner, DeAnna Cooper, Niki Grauberger, Brenda Barre, Chris Freedom and Scott Carter.

Schools represented in District 1 include Clinton West, Council Oak, Emerson, Eugene Field, Mark Twain, Robertson, Wayman Tisdale Fine Arts Academy, Webster Middle School and Webster High School.

In TPS District 2, the candidates are Jania Wester and Gary Cooper.

Schools in District 2 include Booker T. Washington, Carver, Kendall-Whittier, McKinley, Mitchell, Owen, Rogers Junior High, Rogers High School, Sequoyah and Springdale.

Nixon is a conservative and the only Republican in the race. Owner of a small business, she is for school choice for families and wants more transparency for school administrators. Her children were affected by the school consolidations in West Tulsa – an action that helped motivate her to run for the school board.

Wooley describes herself as a “moderate” on her Facebook page. Her hometown is Durant, Oklahoma. She is a “stay at home mom.”

Cooper is from Sand Springs. On her Facebook page, she says she has “over 20 years of service in public education.” She has a master’s degree in applied behavioral studies with a doctorate in higher education. She taught at the Peace Academy, Tulsa’s private Islamic school, and then taught special education at Broken Arrow Public Schools. She is now on the faculty at Tulsa Community College.

Grauberger is a classroom parent volunteer and PTA president in West Tulsa at Clinton West. She said “no one was happy when TPS decided to consolidate our westside schools (Park, Porter and Remington elementaries).” She is a former mental health and substance abuse case manager.

Carter is a professor of economics at The University of Tulsa. He got his doctorate in economics from the New School for Social Research in New York City in 2004.

Wagner is a monitor/technician and student/music educator assistant. He is working on getting his bachelor’s degree. He is a pianist in the Tulsa Honors Orchestra.

Several people have applied to fill a vacancy on the Tulsa Board of Education created by the resignation of Cindy Decker.

Those applicants are: Lindsey Barbour , J.J. Burnam, Brian Carpenter, John Croisant, Denise Da Ros-Voseles, Brian Hosmer, Rebecca Marks Jimerson, Virginia Pendleton, Misti Ryan, Shane Saunders, Sharon Voskuhl, John Walsh and Pamela Williams.

February 12 ballot

In Broken Arrow, the candidates for Office 4 for BAPS are Chancey Bosch and Brandy Roulet.

Municipal voters in Owasso, Sand Springs and Skiatook will also cast primary ballots on February 12 and April 2.

The candidates for Owasso City Council, Ward 5, are Douglas Bonebrake and Sandra Gibbs.

In Sand Springs, Ward 2, the candidates are Patty J. Dixon and Caleb Nelms.
