It was a tough weekend for college basketball for Tulsa, ORU, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma fans as all state teams lost in conference battles.

Baylor 65, OU 51

Oklahoma’s losing streak went to four as the Sooners shot themselves in foot by committing a season-high 25 turnovers against No. 5 Baylor (17-2, 5-2 in Big 12).

Oklahoma’s (12-7, 2-5 in Big 12) 25 turnovers were the most by any Big 12 team this season.

In the first five minutes, OU had 10 turnovers and Baylor led 10-0.

“It is stunning because I think these guys were ready to play,” said OU first-year coach Porter Moser. “We had some good practices and they came out — and I know Baylor is one of the elite pressure teams in the country. You can’t have seven … I think, again, we’ve talked a lot that it’s about finding that line where you understand.

“All of them just wanted to do it. One took it in one-on-one and got a turnover. Then the next one did it. And the next one. It was almost three straight — the same turnovers almost — by different guys. We settled down and we started moving it better.”

Texas 56, OSU 51

OSU (10-8, 3-4 Big 12) stayed close to No. 23 Texas (14-5, 4-3 Big 12) but the Longhorns made key free throws late in the game for the win.

Texas opened the game with a 13-0 run.

“I’m proud of our guys for responding the right way,” said OSU coach Mike Boynton. “But you dig yourself that big a hole on the road in this league and an already difficult task becomes that much greater.”

Texas shot only 36.7% from the field and had 20 turnovers, which matched a season high. Oklahoma State made 12 steals, six by Rondel Walker.

NDSU 72, ORU 71

The Oral Roberts men’s basketball team fell short Saturday, losing to the North Dakota State Bison, 72-71, at the Mabee Center.

Max Abmas, the fourth leading scorer in the nation (22.6 points per game) led ORU with 18 points. Isaac McBride had 15 and Kareem Thompson added 11 for ORU.

As ORU trailed 69-66 with 35 second left, Trey Phipps stole the ball. Phipps steal led to a bucket by Abmas to make it a 69-68 NDSU lead with 19 seconds to play.

NDSU’s Jarius Cook was then fouled and went 1-for-2 from the line to lead, 70-68. Abmas found his sweet spot for a corner three to give the Golden Eagles a 71-70 lead with eight seconds to play.

NDSU’s Sam Griesel he sank a 12-foot floater from the right side to regain the lead, 72-71, with two seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles got a good look on the next play, but Abmas was unable to connect.

MU 83, TU 81

Memphis had a strong second-half to pull out an 83-81 victory over Tulsa Sunday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Tulsa’s 13-point halftime lead fell to a Memphis team that scored 50 second-half points. The Tigers connected on 17-of-24 field goals for 71-percent in the second half, while Tulsa made 10 field goals and shot 45-percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Jeriah Horne led TU with 19 points and seven rebounds. Darien Jackson had 15 points, Sam Griffin had 13 and LaDavious Draine had a season-high 12 points.

The win snapped a three-game Memphis losing streak and improving the Tigers’ record to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in league action. Tulsa dropped its sixth straight and fell to 6-11 and 0-6 in the American.
