Tulsa Attorney Cheryl Baber announced her Republican candidacy for Oklahoma State Senate District 35.
Baber is a former assistant U.S. attorney and federal law clerk who worked on several high-profile cases, including one in which she successfully defended two Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) officers who were working to arrest an illegal immigrant fugitive. Baber said she believes her record defending the Constitution and traditional values as an attorney has prepared her for this seat.
“I’ve spent most of my career in the judicial system defending the Constitution and seeing that our rights as citizens are protected. I want to apply my experience, knowledge, and convictions to defend our constitutional values and deliver effective legislation. I want to be Senate District 35’s voice for conservative solutions,” Baber said.
Baber got her law degree from Columbia University and her bachelor’s degree in political science and economics from Midwestern State University. She lives in Tulsa with Chuck, her husband of nearly 20 years, and their two sons, Grant and Luke. Baber is a life-long Oklahoman. She grew up on a farm and ranch in Walters.
Baber volunteers her time as an attorney with Tulsa Lawyers for Children, an organization which fights on behalf of abused and neglected children in foster care. “As a parent and an attorney, I want to do what I can to protect children and see that Oklahoma can offer them every opportunity to live life to the fullest. As a legislator, I will work with Governor Stitt’s team to address pro-life issues, among many others, toward this purpose.”
The open seat is held by Republican State Senator Gary Stanislawski, who is to term limited. The primary election will be on June 30, 2020.
