Oral Roberts University men’s basketball has clinched at least a share of the Summit League regular season title. They did so with an 82-73 win at Western Illinois, on Saturday.

It would be the first regular season championship for the program since the 2011-12 season. ORU improved to 14-0 in league play making it the best start in conference play in program history. The Golden Eagles are 23-4 overall.

Max Abmas led ORU with 29 points as one of four Golden Eagles to record double-digits. Abmas led his team to its 10th-straight victory, the nation’s second longest winning streak, behind Eastern Washington’s 15 game streak.

ORU led by as much as 24 points in the second half, but at the under eight minute media timeout, Western Illinois had cut ORU’s lead to 13. Abmas hit a three-pointer to lift ORU back up by 16 before the Leathernecks put together a 12-2 run to make it a six-point game with 2:23 to go. WIU had a chance to make it a one possession game, but was rejected at the rim by Connor Vanover with his eighth block of the day. Issac McBride hit a layup on the other end and after a defensive stop, he hit a pair of free-throws to make it a 10-point game with 1:06 to play. The Golden Eagles hit free-throws down the stretch to keep the Leathernecks at arms-length and win, 82-73.

It was Abmas’ fourth-straight 20-point outing as the senior hit five three-point baskets on the day. McBride, Patrick Mwamba and Vanover each scored 12 on the day. Vanover is the only player in division one to record eight blocks twice this season.
