A four-point lead at halftime, held through the second half, gave Southern University a 70-66 win over the University of Tulsa on Saturday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

With the loss, Tulsa fell to 4-6 and Southern evened its record at 4-4.

Southern led by as much as seven points in the first half but at halftime, the Jaguars led 28-24, The two teams played even at 42-42 in the second half.

Tulsa had several opportunities to take the lead throughout the game but could never mount a serious run. In all there were five ties and three lead changes, two of each in the second half.

Tulsa shot 41.2 percent from the field while Southern knocked down 37.1 percent. The Hurricane also made 8-of-26 from 3-point range (30.8 percent), while Southern was 3-of-14 (21.4).

One of the nation’s best teams off the bench, the Jaguars reserves scored 48 points while Tulsa got 26 bench points, 23 of which came from the game’s high scorer Keaston Willis.

For the Golden Hurricane, Tyshawn Archie recorded 17 points while Ian Smikle added a career-best 11 points to go with his eight rebounds.

The Jaguars were led by Michael Jacobs with 19 points, including four straight clutch free throws to ice the game in the final 30 seconds. DaMariee Jones and Derrick Tezeno each scored 10 points for Southern.

Tulsa will play at UCF, Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
