OSU SWEEPS KANSAS STATE
OSU won the first game of the three-game series with Kansas State on Friday, 4-3. Game two on Saturday was postponed and moved to Sunday as part of a double-header.
Sean Youngerman, in only his second start of the season, pitched a gem of a game in the first game of the doubleheader, and the Cowboys shut out the Wildcats, 7-0.
OSU’s offense was powerful in game two and the Cowboys came away with a 10-2 victory to sweep the series at O’Brate Stadium.
With the wins, OSU improved to 15-14 overall and 4-6 in Big 12 play, while No. 22 K-State, which entered the weekend atop the league standings, fell to 20-11 and 8-4 in the conference.
Youngerman picked up his first win in an OSU uniform, working eight shutout innings and striking out 11 while allowing just three hits and no walks. He has been as the Cowboys’ closer most of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.77.
Three Cowboys hit home runs in the game; Nolan Schubart, Kollin Ritchie and Beau Sylvester. Wildcats’ starter Michael Quevedo (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
In game two, Hunter Watkins got the start for OSU, earning the win after pitching five innings and striking out five while allowing two runs. The win moved Watkins to 4-1 on the season.
OSU’s Brayden Smith led off the game with a single to bring his hitting streak to 16 games. Colin Brueggemann drove in the first run with an RBI single up the middle, and Jayson Jones had an RBI groundout to put the Cowboys up 2-0 after the opening inning.
The Cowboys scored six runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
OSU will travel to Tucson this weekend for a three-game series against Arizona.
ORU SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER
Following two days of almost constant rain, and two games being washed out, the ORU Golden Eagles decided to play a doubleheader against South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon, at Chapman Park.
Pitching was the key as Oral Roberts swept the doubleheader against South Dakota State, 4-2 and 9-1.
Easton Teel went seven innings in game one giving up five hits, two runs, one walk, and struck out four.
The Jackrabbits struck first with a two-run homer in the first inning, the 19th time this season the opposition scored first on ORU.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the third inning with Owen Coil’s third homer of the season, a solo shot, and a Wailele Kane-Yate RBI single. In the fifth another pair came in on a Cooper Combs RBI double plus a Makani Tanaka RBI single.
Dalton Patten came out of the bullpen and tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his fourth save of the season.
In game two, Nathan Love turned in his best start of the season, going six innings surrendering just two hits, one run, no walks, and striking out a career-high nine batters. Love retired the first seven batters he faced as the offense gave him an early 1-0 lead.
SDSU tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the third inning.
ORU broke the game open in the fourth with four runs from a Martell Davis sacrifice fly and a Will Edmunson double. Matthew Mainord would grab his first collegiate RBI on a bunt single in the fifth, and in the sixth Keaton Campbell blasted his first homer of the season.
Freshman Brendan Asher came out of the bullpen in the seventh and threw three scoreless innings in relief of Love giving up just one hit and striking out two enroute to his first career save.
ORU will play a three-game series at Northern Colorado this weekend, before a single game at Air Force on Monday.
OU DROPS TWO OF THREE
LSU swept Oklahoma in a three-game series with LSU, at L. Dale Mitchell Park, in Norman. No. 10 Oklahoma dropped the series finale to No. 7 LSU Saturday by a final of 3-2.
LSU won the opening game of the series on Thursday, 2-0, and took game two on Friday, 10-2.
The Tigers (30-3, 10-2 SEC) completed the sweep with a close win, as the Sooners (23-8, 5-7) had the game-tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Following a scoreless first inning, LSU took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an error by the Sooners with two outs. The Sooners responded with one run in the home half of the second as Jaxon Willits raced home on a passed ball after getting on base with walk to leadoff the inning.
The Tigers extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth on an RBI double.
The Sooners scored one run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t get the tying run across.
OU starting pitcher Malachi Witherspoon (2-3) took the loss and went six innings, giving up five hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking three.
The Sooners will host Vanderbilt in a three-game series this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
