Things didn’t go as planned for redshirt freshman quarterback Hauss Hejny, Thursday night in Oklahoma States, 27-7, season opening win over UT-Martin at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Hejny suffered a broken bone in his foot near the end of the first quarter and will miss several games. Before leaving the game, Hejny completed 5-of-10 passes for 96 yards. He threw a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown.
Cowboys’ quarterback Zane Flores took over for Hejny and completed 13-of-26 passes for 136 yards in the game. Terrill Davis, a transfer from Division II Central Oklahoma, had two receptions for 75 yards.
“That was a good (game) to get under our belt and get moving,” said OSU head coach Mike Gundy. “I told the team there will be a lot that we can learn from in all three phases. The good thing is we’ve got good video to learn about some of the new players on our team, which I’m excited about.”
Gundy was happy with what he saw in Hejney, his young starting quarterback.
“I thought he played well,” Gundy said. “He moved around and was effective and made plays with his legs, which is what he does. He didn’t get to play long enough to get into a rhythm, but I thought he started out the game really well.”
OSU opened the scoring on a six-yard touchdown run by Hejny with 11:20 left in the first quarter.
The Cowboys extended their lead to 14-0 when Hejny connected with Gavin Freeman on a 10-yard scoring pass with 03:57 remaining in the first quarter.
The Skyhawks responded with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Bailey to John Gentry with 2:15 left in the first quarter. Gentry finished the game with 51 yards rushing and two catches for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Add a 42-yard field goal by Logan Ward in the second quarter, and Oklahoma State led 17-7 at halftime.
Ward kicked another field goal in the third quarter and OSU led 20-7 before Sesi Vailahi carried the ball nine yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter putting the Cowboys ahead 27-7.
Oklahoma State held UT-Martin to 225 total yards.
“The one thing that we did on defense that was really good was we were good against the run, but unfortunately, we weren’t very good on offense,” Gundy said. “We were a little bit over three yards-per-carry, and I’d love to have that number over 4.5 yards rushing the ball. We did a good job taking care of the ball offensively, and I know defensively we did a good job getting to the quarterback.”
OSU visits Oregon at 2:30 p.m. this Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
