It was a dominant performance by the 13th ranked Oklahoma Sooners as they defeated the Temple Owls, 42-3, Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
“This is a very hungry, driven, humble, tough, high-standard group of young men that like to be pushed, liked to be challenged, they like to practice,” said OU head coach Brent Venable. “When they play together, it does, it kind of resembles recess. I say that respectfully. They have fun.”
The Sooners (3-0) scored their first touchdown of the game when J. Barnes scampered three yards into the end zone. A two-point conversion pass was good, and OU led 8-0 with 9:36 left in the first quarter.
The next OU drive ended with a 52-yard field goal by T. Sandell, putting the Sooners ahead 11-0 after one quarter.
OU scored on back-to-back rushing touchdowns by T. Blaylock, from six and eighteen yards out, respectively, and Oklahoma had a comfortable 25-0 lead with 10:05 remaining in the second quarter.
Temple finally got on the scoreboard with a 34-yard field goal by C. Hardin.
Sandell kicked another field goal for the Sooners before halftime, this one from 29 yards and OU led 28-3 at the intermission.
Midway through the third quarter, OU quarterback John Mateer connected with X.Robinson on a six-yard touchdown pass.
Less than three minutes later, the Sooners extended their lead to 42-3, when Mateer kept the ball for a 51-yard scoring run, with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter. With the large lead, OU brought in backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. to finish off the game.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Mateer said he felt like the Sooners made some improvement in this game.
“We got one game better, it wasn’t our best, we’re still striving for that, but we got better, and we were able to run the ball there at the end,” Mateer said.
Mateer completed 20-of-34 passes for 282 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score. Blaylock carried the ball 14 times for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Isaiah Sategna III caught seven passes for 97 yards.
As a team, Oklahoma outdistanced Temple by over 400 total yards, 515 to 104. The Owls’ quarterback Evan Simon completed 13-of-25 passes for 75 yards.
The Sooners punted the ball away only four times, while Temple had 12 punts in the game.
The Sooners will host SEC opponent Auburn this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Gaylord Family – Memorial Stadium.
