This was the type of performance University of Tulsa fans have been waiting for. The Golden Hurricane offense looked sharp and the defense was stellar, defeating Oregon State 31-14 Saturday afternoon at H.A. Chapman Stadium. This was the first time these two programs have faced each other.
With the nonconference win, Tulsa improved to 3-7 overall (0-6 AAC). Oregon State dropped to 2-9 (0-0 Pac-12).
Tulsa forced Oregon State to punt on their first possession of the game, then the Golden Hurricane marched 73 yards down the field and capped a five-play drive with a 24-yard touchdown run by Dominic Richardson to take an early 7-0 lead.
Before the end of the quarter, Tulsa scored again with a six-yard touchdown pass from Baylor Hayes to Brody Foley.
Both teams exchanged defensive stops in the second quarter before Tulsa extended its lead with a Seth Morgan 25-yard field goal, and the Golden Hurricane led 17-0 at halftime.
Tulsa extended its lead in the third quarter, 24-0, with a six-play drive that covered 75 yards and ended with a five-yard touchdown run by Foley with 12:32 left in the third quarter.
Tulsa’s dominating performance continued in the fourth quarter, as the Golden Hurricane took a 31-0 lead with an Ajay Allen 31-yard run into the end zone.
Now with the Beavers third quarterback of the game, their offense finally began to click, as Tristan Ti’a connected with Trent Walker on a three-yard touchdown pass with 8:49 remaining in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
With 1:57 left in the game, Ti’a threw a four-yard touchdown pass to David Wells Jr., and Karson Boschma completed the two-point conversion to bring the score to 31–14.
“He’s a good player, that’s the reason why he’s here,” said Oregon State head coach Robb Akey about Ti’a. “He got his first opportunity and did some good stuff with it, so we’ll look to see where he can grow.”
Tulsa’s offense was led by Richardson with a season-high 166 rushing yards on 27 carries and a touchdown. Hayes completed 12-of-19 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Foley set a career high with seven receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Tulsa’s Ray Coney racked up 10 total tackles and one sack. The TU defense forced Oregon State to punt seven times in the game. Tulsa punted only three times.
