Army carried an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tulsa Golden Hurricane came from behind to win, 26-25, Saturday at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y. It was the first American Conference win for head coach Tre Lamb.
Tulsa was a 10-point underdog coming into the game and had lost 10 consecutive American Conference games. Coming off a win last week over Oregon State, the Golden Hurricane hadn’t won two games in a row in over two years.
Tulsa improved to 4-7 overall, 1-6 in the AAC. Even with a win this week against UAB, Tulsa will not become bowl eligible. Army dropped to 5-5 overall, 3-4 AAC. This was the third time these two teams have met, with Tulsa winning twice at West Point, and Army winning last year at Tulsa.
“To say I’m disappointed would be an understatement,’” said Army head coach Jeff Monken. “I’m disappointed for our entire team, certainly for our seniors playing their last game here.”
Tulsa received the kickoff to begin the game and opened the scoring on their first drive covering 75 yards in seven plays and finishing with a three-yard touchdown run by Dominic Richardson, just 2:37 into the game.
Army responded quickly on their first possession with a two-play drive that covered 75 yards and finished with a 31-yard touchdown on a quarterback-keeper by Cale Hellums. The score was tied 7-7 after one quarter of play.
In the second quarter, Tulsa took the lead again when Ajay Allen carried the ball seven yards into the end zone, and the Golden Hurricane went ahead, 14-7.
Hellums put on a show in the second quarter, scoring twice for the Black Knights, his second and third touchdowns of the game, both from five yards out, giving Army a 22-14 lead at halftime.
Army extended its lead in the third quarter with a Dawson Jones 33-yard field goal, putting the Black Knights ahead 25-14.
The Golden Hurricane looked as if they would respond with a scoring drive of their own, but quarterback Baylor Hayes fumbled the ball at the Army 14-yard line and it was recovered by the Black Knights’ Eric Ford, ending TU drive.
Tulsa took charge of the fourth quarter, with three unanswered scores. A Seth Morgan 48-yard field goal was followed by an interception by Tulsa’s Lento Smith Jr. setting up another scoring drive for TU.
The next possession for Tulsa produced an eight-yard touchdown pass from Baylor Hayes to Josh Smith, and Tulsa moved within two points of Army, 25-23.
On the following Army possession, all the Black Knights needed to do was achieve one first down and run out the clock, but on fourth-and-three they failed to convert, giving the ball back to Tulsa with 1:36 remaining in the game.
Tulsa quickly drove to field goal territory, and with 12 seconds remaining, Morgan kicked the game winning field goal from 27-yards, giving Tulsa their first AAC victory of the season.
“They outplayed us in the second half, they just outplayed us,’” Monken said. “If we make the first down there, which I thought we had a good call. We can end the game on that play. Yeah, yards were hard to come by, so as it turns out, we tried to end the game right there, and it’s what we need to do. It’s who we are. It’s what we need to do. We just didn’t execute it. We didn’t get it done.”
For Tulsa, Hayes completed 20-of-31 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown. Richardson carried the ball 28 times, amassing a career-high 203 rushing yards and scoring one touchdown. Richardson became the 23rd player in TU history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. Josh Smith contributed through the air with three receptions for 50 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Ray Coney led the team with 13 tackles, increasing his season total of tackles to 117.
For Army, Hellums completed 6-of-10 passes for 64 yards, but he contributed 160 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Tulsa outgained Army in total yards, 497 to 311, even though TU was penalized nine times for 67 yards, while Army was only flagged two times for 26 yards.
The Golden Hurricane will host UAB on Saturday, at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.
