The best player in America will play football for the Oklahoma Sooners.
But quarterback Brock Vandagriff first has to finish high school and he won’t sign with the Sooners until sometime perhaps in 2020. His high school class graduates in 2021.
Rivals.com has already named the record-setting quarterback as not only the best pro-style quarterback in his class but the best overall player. Vandagriff, the son of his high school coach, tweeted on June 20 that he was verbally committed to Oklahoma.
“Oklahoma was the best decision for me because it checked all the boxes as an individual and as an athlete,” Vandagriff told Rivals. “The staff was more than welcoming, and unbelievably outgoing throughout the process. It only took two visits to know that is where I will be spending my college years. that is how special it is in Norman.”
Vandagriff has been recruited by dozens of schools, including Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee were on top of his list.
Vandagriff took a visit Norman in April and then returned for OU’s elite camp. The 6-foot-3, 198-pound quarterback plays at Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Georgia.
As of June, OU has only two 2021 commitments – Vandagriff and wide receiver Cody Jackson.
Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts is a graduate transfer to Oklahoma this year. He is expected to start although he will compete against redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai and incoming freshman Spencer Rattler. Rattler has been previously rated as the best dual-purpose quarterback in the nation in the class of 2019.
In 2017, former OU quarterback Baker Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy and was subsequently the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He started most games for the Browns and is projected to be a star in the league.
In 2018, former OU quarterback Kyler Murray won the Heisman Trophy and was drafted No. 1 in the NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Murray is slated to start for the Cardinals in 2019.
Some oddsmakers have Hurts as No. 3 on the list of favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in the 2019 season.
As far as the class of 2020, players can make verbal commitments but will sign letters of intent later this year or early next year.
According to Rivals, OU has several commitments (as of June 20), including two running backs (Seth McGowan of Mesquite, Texas, and Jase McClellan of Aledo, Texas), two wide receivers (Trevon West of Arlington, Texas, and Davon Graham of Keller, Texas), two offensive linemen (Noah Nelson of Gilbert, Arizona, and Nate Anderson of Frisco, Texas), two defensive backs (Ryan Watts of Little Elm, Texas, and Dontae Manning of Raytown, Missouri), two “athletes” (Brian Darby of College Station, Texas, and Michael Henderson of Irving, Texas) plus one defensive tackle (Perrion Winfrey of Council Bluffs, Iowa). OU recently added Louisiana linebacker Edgerrin Cooper
McClellan is rated the No. 7 running back in the nation and McGowan is ranked as No. 14.
That list is sure to grow and some could drop off.
Oklahoma State has 12 on their list of verbally committed players, according to Rivals.
Shane Illingworth (6-5, 220 pound) of Norco, California, is rated a four-star prospect. This pro-style quarterback has been recruited by Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Boston College, Colorado, Louisville, Missouri, Oregon State, San Jose State and Washington State.
Illingworth is rated the No. 11th best quarterback prospect in the nation in his class. Illingworth, who has family ties in Oklahoma, committed to OSU on June 12.
The Cowboys have six players from Oklahoma who have verbally committed. Those are defensive back Jordan Reagan of Bixby High School; defensive back Zach Middleton of Tulsa; athlete Jeff Roberson of Choctaw; linebacker Cole Thompson of Norman; linebacker Brynden Walker of Oklahoma City and offensive lineman Eli Russ of Ardmore.
So far, there are no running backs or wide receivers who have committed but Quinton Stewart of Salina, Kansas, is a tight end. OSU has no reported commitments from the class of 2021.
No pledges have been announced for Tulsa.
Arkansas has a commitment from quarterback Chandler Morris of Dallas – the son of Arkansas coach Chad Morris.
