This week is a hodge-podge of sports news and views. By the way, does anyone even say “hodge-podge” any more?

The University of Tulsa played at Houston last Thursday night, and things didn’t go the way of the Golden Hurricane, once again. TU was leading 26-17 with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Houston scored 24 straight points to win 41-26 win, at TDECU Stadium.

In an attempt to change things up a bit, Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery gave redshirt freshman quarterback Seth Boomer his first career start. Boomer threw for 227 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the American Athletic Conference. The Cougars record improved to 4-1 overall, 1-0 in the AAC.

Tulsa is home this Friday night for a 6 p.m. matchup against USF (4-0, 1-0) at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

FALL BASEBALL

It’s extremely rare that during the fall college baseball workouts a team would play anything other than inter-squad games, however, this year the ORU Golden Eagles are playing two outside opponents. ORU traveled to play Central Arkansas last Saturday, and the Golden Eagles will host Kansas on Oct. 20. The game with the Jayhawks will feature an extended matchup that is free and open to the public, so here’s your chance to see the 2019 squad in action early.

I know there are a lot of Kansas fans in the area, as well, as they were out at J.L. Johnson stadium in force this past spring when the Jayhawks played at ORU during the regular season.

OILERS OPENER

Four different players contributed goals in the Tulsa Oilers only preseason game Saturday night at Wichita, as the Oilers defeated the Thunder 4-2.

Roman Ammirato, Scott Henegar, Charlie Sampair, and Scott Cutthrell were the goal scorers for Tulsa.

Earlier in training camp, the Oilers announced the return of fan favorite and team captain Adam Pleskach. The 30-year-old winger is set to begin his sixth season in Tulsa and is the longest-tenured Oilers player. The Beausejour, Manitoba, native has played 327 of his 338 professional games in an Oilers jersey, including the most ECHL games in team history (266). Pleskach has totaled 256 points (134 goals, 122 assists) during his five seasons in Tulsa, and was named captain for the first time last season.

“Adam will again serve as our captain,” said Oilers head coach Tom Murray in a statement released by the team. “He demands respect from his teammates with his ability to show up every night and give all that he has. While he’s not a ‘Rah Rah’ leader, his message gets across when he speaks.”

The Oilers open the 2018-19 season at the BOK Center this Saturday, October 13, against the Idaho Steelheads at 7:05 p.m. It is the second season for the Oilers to be affiliated with the St. Louis Blues of the NHL.

SUMMIT PRESEASON POLL

The Summit League preseason basketball poll was released last week with South Dakota State holding the top spot in both the men’s and women’s polls. The ORU Golden Eagles men’s team was picked sixth, while the women’s team was selected in the fourth spot.

The ORU men will open the season Nov. 6 at Missouri State, and the women will open at home on Nov. 2 hosting Rockhurst, at 7:05 p.m.
