State Sen. Kevin Matthews, D-Tulsa, is suspending his campaign for the District 1 seat on the Tulsa County Commission.

Matthews cited personal issues and professional obligations for the decision to stop taking donations and stop campaigning personally. It is past the time to officially withdraw, so Matthews will be on the ballot November 6 against Republican nominee Stan Sallee.

Matthews was in the Oklahoma House prior to being elected to the Oklahoma Senate in Senate District 11, a seat formerly held by Sen. Jabar Shumate. Matthews’ Senate term ends in 2020. Matthews was named chairman of the 1921 Centennial Commission.

He has not stated publicly whether he will resume the race for county commissioner later.
