What is the religious background of the Democrat candidates for president?
The major candidates are Hindu, Presbyterian, Catholic, Quaker, Jewish, Baptist, Anglican, Episcopal, Methodist, Church of Christ and “Protestant.”
Of the top 20 Democrats, seven are Catholic, two are Hindu and three have religious backgrounds but are not affiliated currently with any specific religion or church.
Even though faith plays a major role in the lives of many American voters, most Democrat candidates don’t speak much about their religion.
However, some don’t hesitate to use foul or blasphemous language in their comments about opponents, President Donald Trump in particular.
Here is information about those candidates.
Catholic
Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is Catholic. He is pro-abortion and got a 100 percent rating from NARAL and was endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana. He supports legalized homosexual marriage.
Former U.S. Rep. John Delaney, D-Maryland, says he is of the Catholic faith and is on the board of directors of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School. He supports homosexual marriage.
Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke is a Roman Catholic. He voted against “No taxpayer funding for abortion” and the Abortion Full Disclosure Act of 2017. O’Rourke supports homosexual marriage as “a core civil rights issue.” He supports professional football players who have “taken a knee” during the playing of the National Anthem.
And answering a question about President Trump, O’Rourke took the name of Jesus Christ in vain in his answer.
“”Well, (deleted), of course he’s racist! He’s been racist from Day 1,” O’Rourke said of Trump.
Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, is a Roman Catholic.
After the shooting in Dayton, Ohio, Ryan tweeted “(Expletive deleted) me” after Trump mistakenly, at one point in his speech, said the Ohio shooting took place in Toledo.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, D-Delaware, is Catholic.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, is Catholic. She supports Planned Parenthood, abortion on demand and has said killing a late-term unborn baby should not be called “infanticide.”
Julian Castro is Catholic. He announced for his run for president in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, where he was baptized, and announced that his family has been Catholic for generations.
Castro has called Trump a “racist.”
Hindu
U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, claims to be a Baptist who was raised in the Baptist and Hindu traditions. She also has called Trump a racist.
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, had a father who was Catholic and a mother who was a Hindu. She is a Hindu. The name “Tulsi” means “holy basil” – a sacred plant in Hinduism.
Buddhism
Marianne Williamson, an author, was raised in a conservative Jewish home. In her books, she has written about the value of Transcendental Meditation and Buddhism. She has been a spiritual advisor to Ophrah Winfrey.
Episcopal
Mayor Pete Buttigieg, D-South Bend, Indiana, was baptized as an infant in the Catholic Church but in college he switched to being “Anglican.” He is a member of the Episcopal Church in South Bend, Indiana. On June 16, 2018, he married another man, Chasten Giezman, in Cathedral of St. James. Giezman has changed his name to Chasten Buttigieg.
Buttigieg has said that anyone who does not advocate for open borders is not a good Christian.
Methodist
U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, 70, was raised in the Methodist Church. She reportedly attends “various churches.”
Baptist
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, is a Baptist who was raised as a Methodist.
After Trump commented on the shootings in Texas and Ohio, Booker tweeted, “Such a (expletive deleted) soup of ineffective words.”
Church of Christ
U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is a Congregationalist and a member of the United Church of Christ.
Quaker
Former Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper has dropped out of the race.
Not religious
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders is a secular Jew and but “is not very religious.” He believes “religious freedom is not a right to discriminate.” He criticized the Burwell v. Hobby Lobby decision because he wants to force businesses to provide health insurance that pay for chemical abortions.
U.S. Sen. Michael Bennett, D-Colorado, was raised in both Jewish and Christian traditions but is unaffiliated with any religion now.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, D-New York City, grew up attending no church after his mother rejected her Catholic faith.
Gov. Jay Inslee, D-Washington, lists his religion as “Protestant.”
Andrew Yang attends the Reformed Church of New Paltz. He says he identifies as “spiritual but not religious.” According to that church’s website, they “do not believe that homosexuality is a sin” and or “conversion therapy” (that people can leave a homosexual lifestyle).
