Gundy said that OSU had 18 players – including a four-star quarterback from California – sign December 18 during the early signing period.
The group includes eight defensive players, nine offensive players and one athlete who will be assigned at a later time. The two most well-represented states are Oklahoma with six players and Texas with four. In total, eight states are represented. There are 17 high school players in the class and one junior college transfer.
Of the nine offensive players, four are offensive linemen and five are skill players, including the highest-rated player in the class according to the recruiting services, quarterback Shane Illingworth from Norco, Calif.
The defensive side of the ball features two defensive linemen, three linebackers, two cornerbacks and a safety.
The highest profile signee is four-star quarterback Shane Illingworth of Norco, California. Recently, Gundy has signed quarterbacks from around the nation.
“Quarterback wise, you go all over the country,” Gundy said. “You go everywhere and try to find what’s out there. That’s the one position where can draw guys in from just about anywhere. There’s not as many quarterback scholarships because most of your schools take one. Some of them don’t take one every year. So, you can go out and find them wherever.
“(In California) The population is big out there. They play it year round. The weather’s good. They play 7-on-7 year round. There’s just a lot more people to choose from out there than there are in this part of the country.”
How does Gundy rate Illingworth?
“He’s got size,” Gundy said. “He’s got strength. His best years are ahead of him. “He’s all football. That’s all he does.”
OSU signed a bunch of linemen.
Overall, this is our fourth year in a row with solid offensive linemen,” Gundy said. “We went years where we were struggling.
“We have accumulated a lot of defensive and offensive linemen.”
