AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco announced that the American Athletic Conference will suspend all spring sports competition until further notice.
The decision to suspend was made after consultation with member school to fight the spread of the coronavirus and to protect athletes, coaches, institutional and event staff, media and spectators.
“While we are all disappointed to not be continuing our season, especially for our seniors Martins Igbanu and Lawson Korita, we recognize that this issue is not about sports,” said TU coach Frank Haith.
“This is about doing everything we can as responsible citizens to protect our student-athletes, our campuses and our communities. These are very difficult decisions being made across the country and I have a great deal of respect for those making these calls.
“Their decision to cancel the NCAA Tournament hurts all of us, and I know it hurt those decision-makers greatly as well. But, it was the right call.”
“The University of Tulsa athletics fully supports the American Athletic Conference decision to suspend all spring sports competition,” said Tulsa’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg.
“It is our highest priority at Tulsa to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans. Although daunting, this measure is prudent and responsible as college athletics perseveres through this virus.”
