They did it again!

This 2020 Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team has made come-from-behind victories the norm, and it’s been very exciting to watch.

Last Thursday evening at H.A. Chapman Stadium, No. 24Tulsa came back from a 14-point deficit to score 21 points in the fourth quarter, and ultimate beat Tulane, 30-24, in double overtime. It was the fourth comeback win for TU this season.

“Words really can’t explain that one, right,” said Tulsa head coach Philip Montgomery after the game. “Again, I’m just so proud of our young men. You know, words can’t really explain it but the one thing I can explain is that is just a special group of guys down there, and it took every one of them, it took all three phases. You know, Tulane is a really good football team, came in here on a roll with three wins.”

Montgomery said he didn’t feel his team played their best, but he appreciates the fact that they never give up.

“You know, I don’t know that we played our best ball tonight but we found a way to win and that’s the best way that I can explain it. Those guys down there in that locker room, they believe in each other. They are going to fight for 60 minutes, every second of it and it took every second of it tonight. Just couldn’t be prouder.”

Tulsa lost starting quarterback Zach Smith in the first half and backup Seth Boomer in the third quarter with injuries.

It took a huge fourth quarter offensive performance by the Golden Hurricane and third-string quarterback Davis Brin, to pull off the victory.

Brin, a sophomore, rushed for one touchdown and threw for 2 more in the fourth quarter comeback that put the game into overtime tied at 21.

With Tulsa on the Tulane 37-yard line with just 0:06 remaining on the clock, Brin was facing a third-down and seven-yards to go situation. He avoided a tackler and launched a “Hail Mary” pass to the right corner of the end zone. JuanCarlos Santana jumped higher than three other players and caught the pass for the touchdown. The point after tied the game at 21-21 with no time remaining.

Montgomery said he has confidence in all three of the team’s quarterbacks.

“I’ve been saying it since the start of the season and everybody’s asked me questions about it, but this is the best overall quarterback room I’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “And I said I have three guys in that room right now that I feel comfortable going in and playing games with, and we needed all three tonight.”

Specifically, Montgomery said Brin has prepared well for the opportunity to play.

“Davis is a kid that he does exactly what we ask him to do from the standpoint of preparing himself to be the starter each and every week,” Montgomery said. “He’s taken notes. He’s studying. He’s getting extra film time. When he gets those opportunities in practice, he’s making the most of them. He’s diligent about it, and tonight, didn’t surprise I don’t think anybody on our football team, and I know it didn’t surprise Davis. He prepared himself. He was ready. He stepped in there. Made some big throws. Heck, made a great run. You know, I can’t say enough of how proud I am of the way he prepares himself and then what he did tonight and just the confidence that our team has in him, that we have in him, and he stepped up big time for sure.”

Tulsa will play at Houston this Saturday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. (CST). The game will air on ESPNU.

TU SCHEDULE CHANGE
