American Airlines canceled hundreds of flights last weekend due to a lack of staff, maintenance issues and other problems as the demand for air travels surges back to levels from 2019 – before the Chinese coronavirus.

On Sunday, 190 flights – about 6% of the schedule – were canceled according to reports. That was about 3% of the airline’s total when you factor in regional carriers. On Saturday, about 4% of the flights (123) were canceled and 106 on Monday.

Plans call for as many as 950 flight cancellations in the first two weeks of July.

About half reportedly were canceled due to a lack of available flight crews. The airline plans to cut its overall schedule by about 1% through mid-July to minimize the problems. Bad weather in Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte, North Carolina, contributed to the problems. Those disruptions affected the federal limits for how long crews can work.

Due to the coronarvirus, many customer service agents took voluntary leaves of absence or buyouts and American Airlines is moving to hired more agents to fill the gap. American is retraining furloughed pilots to get them back to work.
