Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy had good reason to dance in the locker room following the Cowboys’ 32-24 comeback win over Texas Saturday in Austin.
After the win, undefeated OSU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) is ranked No. 8/9 in the top polls.
“This was a really, really good culture win for us as an organization,” Gundy said. “We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half, didn’t really give ourselves a chance. Guys rallied back and coaches came up with really good plans at half, I was really proud of that. that have that proud of them. But team, they have a great culture, they care about each other, it’s important to them, and this win is a credit to that.”
In the fourth quarter, the Cowboy defense held Texas (4-3, 2-2) to one total yard of offense while OSU racked up 170 yards
The Oklahoma State defense forced four consecutive three-and-outs in the second half and on the fifth possession, held Texas on a fourth down that amounted to a three-and-out. .
“It’s a credit to Rob Glass, credit to our conditioning and credit to our players and their willingness to play right up until the end of the game,” Gundy said.
OSU averaged 4.5 plus yards per rush and ran 82 offensive plays to 60 for Texas.
OSU running back Jaylen Warren ran 33 times for 193 yards. He outperformed the nation’s third-leading rusher, Bijan Robinson, by 58 yards on the ground. In the fourth quarter alone, Warren carried 14 times for 138 yards.
“We changed the direction we were setting the formation,” Gundy said. “You set it more to the boundary. His cutbacks as you can tell allowed us to rush the ball and get natural creases and cutbacks. It made a big difference.”
OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders didn’t have his best game but he played well when it really mattered.
“He missed some throws, but we didn’t protect him,” Gundy said. “It’s really hard to evaluate a quarterback when you don’t do a good job of protecting him. I didn’t think we protected him very good at all.
“So he missed a few throws. When you’re concerned about pressure coming consistently, which it was at times, it’s just tough to play. That part I know because I’ve been in that position and I know how to feel it. So he rushed the ball, he did a good job with decision making, in my opinion, most of the time. He made some throws when he had to and his numbers won’t look as good, 19 of 32 (passing), because of pressure.”
OSU placekicker Tanner Brown hit four crucial field goals.
“He’s been really good,” said Gundy “So, as of now, his times are good. His elevation has been good. At the end there when he’s trying to kick for the lead, there’s a lot of pressure, and he’s executed so far.
“Our snaps have been good, Tom (Hutton) has been good with the holds, our protection has been good and so moving forward, he would be the guy based on the success he’s had at this point.”
This is the second time this season Oklahoma State has erased a double-digit deficit to win. The Cowboys trailed Boise State, 20-7, and came back to win, 21-20 on Sept. 18.
Oklahoma State has won six of the last seven games against Texas.
“Well, they’re not scared of anybody,” Gundy said of his team. “We talk a lot about no fear, no frustration, no fatigue in everything we do, and not just here but anywhere. We have a lot of experience on defense. It doesn’t faze them, they just go play and that’s what you’re talking about right? They had one hundred grand here today, and we only had 82 players.
“So you have to be able to prepare them and let them prepare themselves to be in a hostile environment without being here. You have to give them credit, on paper, they’re better than us. That’s the way people grade it out. But they prepare well, they focus, they’re disciplined for the most part. I think we only had one procedure penalty right? Playing in front of 100,000. Pretty good. So, they’re just focused and they get it, they’re not fazed by much.”
Conversely, this was the second week in a row that Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has blown big leads against Oklahoma and then OSU.
“Right now we’re in a space where we get a lead, something doesn’t go our way and we harbor a little bit of the negative thoughts,” Sarkisian said. “And those negative thoughts creep into cautious play, uncertainty and ultimately errors.”
OSU faces another road challenge when they travel to Ames, Iowa, Saturday to play Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. on Fox. The Cyclones (4-2, 2-1) were ranked in the Top 12 in the preseason poll by losses to No. 10 Iowa and Baylor dropped them out of the Top 25.
After ISU, the Cowboys host Kansas, travel to West Virginia, host TCU, travel to Texas and Tech and then end the regular season by hosting in-state rival No. 2/3 OU.
Should OSU and OU enter the Bedlam game unbeaten, the two teams would play a week later in Arlington, Texas, for the Big 12 Championship.
