According to the state’s 2018-19 School Report Card, academic achievement declined in all tested grades statewide. That drop was most pronounced in Oklahoma high schools.

The Oklahoma Legislature has committed hundreds of millions of dollars in higher funding for public schools, including significant raises in teacher pay in the past two years.

“If districts have done nothing different than what they’ve always done, they likely saw a drop in their overall letter grade,” said State Education Superintendent Joy Hofmeister.

In Tulsa Public Schools, the number of schools with overall Fs increased to 29 while 25 school got overall Ds in academic achievement. That’s more than last year, when the evaluation system was revamped statewide.

Booker T. Washington was the only TPS high school with an A in academic achievement. Edison was the only one with a B grade. No TPS high schools got C grades. Webster and Memorial high schools got Ds. Central, Will Rogers, McLain, Hale and East Central high schools all got Fs in academic achievement.

None of Tulsa’s suburban schools got overall F grades. Four Broken Arrow schools got a D grade and seven Union schools got Ds. That was two more than last year for Broken Arrow and three more Ds for Union.

Edmond Memorial High School, Edmond North High School and Edmond Santa Fe High School all got an overall B grade.

Statewide:

  • 95 elementary schools improved one letter grade or more in the overall grade, largely due to increases in academic growth.
  • 95 middle schools increased one letter grade or more in the overall grade.
  • 5 high schools improved two overall letter grades due to gains in points for graduation and postsecondary opportunities.
  • 44 high schools increased one overall letter grade.

For statewide high schools, the report card shows a 0.7% increase in the four-year graduation rate – from 82.9% to 83.6%. In particular, internships are up 400% over last year.

Statewide, academic growth was up for students in third through eighth grades. The rate of math growth was an improvement over 2018, while growth in English language arts (ELA) was down slightly year over year.
