Due to the downturn caused by the Chinese coronavirus, American Airlines said the company will furlough or layoff about 19,000 employees in October.

The company will cut more than 8,000 flight attendants.

American Airlines originally projected that 25,000 pilots, flight attendants  and worker could be furloughed. According to published reports, about 23,000 American Airlines personnel have taken early retirement as a result of the crisis.

Also, the airline said they are cutting service to 15 markets because of low demand and reduced federal aid. Passenger airlines got $25 billion in federal subsidies in March to help pay employees for six months. That money runs out on October 1.

U.S. air travel is down about 70% from the same time last year.
