What Gender is a computer?

There were a group of adults that were taking a course at a community college and after a few weeks of classes, the professor decided to have some fun one day by asking a question. As a little learning activity, he divided the students up and put the men on one side of the room, women on the other side. He said I want you all to do a project for the next 10 minutes and decide  “what gender computers ought to be”.

And so they deliberated for the 10 minutes and finally it was time to respond. The men had voted unanimously that computers should be referred to in the feminine gender.  So, the professor said all right, share with me your points and they said they had four points.

The first reason why computers should be spoken of in the feminine gender is because no one but their creator understands their internal logic.

The second reason is because when computers communicate with each other they speak in code language that only they and experts can understand.

The third reason is because every mistake you make is stored on their hard drive for later retrieval.

The fourth reason these men said was because as soon as you commit to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessorizing it.

Now don’t laugh too hard because the women have the last word on this subject.

The women also voted unanimously that computers must be in the  masculine gender.   They answered the question why, they too had four points.

First, in order to get their attention, you have to wake them up.

Secondly, they have a lot of data, but still can’t think for themselves.

Thirdly they are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem.

The final reason, because as soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Cute, but when it comes to humans, this is not that hard.

If you have ever been a father and mother, when your child was born,  doctors and nurses and all that are present, will know immediately whether they are a male or  female.  No Questions asked at that moment.

When all three of our children were born in the 70’s, it was interesting that the doctors and nurses would often make bets on whether it would be a baby girl or baby boy. Some, based their guess on the heartbeat being faster or slower, some on the way the baby was positioned in my wife’s womb and others based on how active the baby was etc.

Our second child was predicted to be a boy based on a number of different reasons by all the nurses and doctors in the room.  A boy they all said. To our surprise, since we assumed they were correct and we had only a boys name picked out, out came another little girl.  I guess since it was Valentine Day, it was supposed to be a beautiful little girl, right?   The point being, which is supported throughout history, the gender was clear that this baby was a girl the minute she was born as a gift to my wife and I from God.

We now have 11 grandchildren, 4 beautiful girls and 7 handsome boys.  All were without question created by God and as the Bible says in Gen 1:26-28 “male or female”.

The Word of God says we are created  by God’s intention for humanity to be female and male related to human incompleteness apart from a sexually differentiated other.  The Word of God has the answer so many are looking for in our world of confusion in the area of gender. Pray for their confusion to be obvious as it has been for anyone in a delivery room at the time of birth of a human being.

Hope you enjoyed the story of the discussion of the gender of a computer.  Justification for a decision does not make it so.
