On Tuesday, May 13th the slates for the two June 10th Special House elections were decided.  The Republican sides of the ballot were down to two candidates each in this runoff.

These special House elections were caused by the resignation of two House members after they won the November election.  They resigned to take County and City of Tulsa positions. Amanda Swope (D) now works in the Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichol’s office and Mark Vancuren (R) works for the newly election Tulsa County Commissioner, Lonnie Sims.

The District 71 House  election saw Beverly A. Atteberry pitted against Tania Garza.  Longtime District 71 resident Atteberry won over Garza with 66 percent to 34 percent of the vote.  In real numbers there was a very low participation of voters with 147 votes going to Atteberry and 75 for Gara for a total of only 222 votes.

Atteberry will go into the general election on Tuesday June 10th against Amanda Clinton who won out against three other Democrats in the primary election in February.

The District 74 runoff election was between Kevin Wayne Norwood and Sheila Vancuren (wife of now resigned Rep. Mark Vancuren). This was a very close election with Norwood barely getting the 51 percent needed to win, and Vancuren just short with 49 percent. This election was won by only 42 votes out of the 1,472 votes cast.  This is still a small percentage of the voters in this district.  Norwood earned 757 votes to Vancuren’s  715.

Norwood (R) will now run in the June 10 general election against Amy Hossain (D)  the lone Democrat who filed for this seat.

The last day to request an absentee ballot for this election is  May 26.  Early voting will be held on June 5th and 6th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Tulsa County Election Board.

The deadline for voter registration to be able to vote in this election has passed.
