University of Tulsa defensive end Trevis Gipson was selected Saturday by the Chicago Bears as the 10th pick in the 5th round and the No. 155 overall selection of the NFL Draft.
Gipson finished his career with 114 tackles, 25.5 TFLs, 13 sacks and eight forced fumbles. The four-year letter winner and two-year starter was invited to the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine following the 2019 season.
Gipson, from Cedar Hill (Texas) High School, finished his senior season with 49 tackles and was among the American Athletic Conference leaders for sacks and TFLs. He totaled eight sacks for -52 yards to rank 5th in The American, while his 15 TFLs for -72 yards ranked 7th in the league.
Gipson also added six quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles as a senior. He had season-highs of seven tackles and 3.5 TFLs for -13 yards vs. Houston in 2019. As a junior, Gipson ranked second in the nation with five forced fumbles and also tallied 46 tackles, nine TFLs for -30 yards, four sacks for -20 yards, five forced fumbles in his 12 starts.
The last time Tulsa had two NFL draft picks in the same season came in 1994 when wide receiver Chris Penn went in the 3rd round (No. 96) to the Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Gus Frerotte was a 7th round (No. 197) selection by the Washington Redskins.
The Tulsa duo are also the first defensive players selected in the NFL draft since linebacker Chris Chamberlain was chosen in the 7th round (No. 228) by the Los Angeles Rams.
It’s the earliest that Tulsa has had two players picked in the NFL draft since 1979 when Tulsa players went in the 2nd and 4th rounds (Rickey Watts, Chicago Bears, 2nd and Eddie Hare, Boston Patriots, 4th).
