The Oklahoma House Public Health Committee approved a bill that would strip away the state license of any doctor who commits an abortion.
This is almost identical to a bill by Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow, that passed both houses but was vetoed by ex-Gov. Mary Fallin three years ago.
HB1182 by Rep. Jim Olson, R-Roland, will now advance to a vote to the House floor. Rep. Regina Goodwin, D-Tulsa, voted no on the bill in the committee.
Goodwin doesn’t think the courts would support the bill. Olson said the question is not whether it is legal but rather is it moral and is it the right thing to do.
If there is a court challenge, the law will be defended by the Oklahoma Attorney General.
Rep. Marcus McEntire, R-Duncan, said HB1182 wouldn’t stop abortions because Oklahoma women would simply go to another state.
