Quarterback Davis Brin looked ready to take on the job of starter during Tulsa’s football Spring game Saturday.
Tulsa quarterbacks completed 28-of-48 passes for 280 yards. Brin completed 13-of-24 passes for 173 yards and Roman Fuller connected on 12-of-18 passes for 85 yards. A total of 12 different receivers caught passes for the Hurricane, led by Keylon Stokes with four catches for 56 yards and Santana with four receptions for 55 yards.
Tulsa closed out the 15 days of spring practice with its final workout on Tuesday.
The Tulsa offense opened the scrimmage with a 36-yard pass play from Davis Brin to JuanCarlos Santana and went on to score a total four TDs and one field goal. All four of Tulsa’s touchdowns came on the ground but were set up by some key pass completions
The defense did not force a turnover but had a number of big plays and was solid most of the day in the red zone. The Hurricane defense picked up where it left off in the 2020 season with 11 tackles for lost yardage, including five quarterback sacks. The “D” also had four pass breakups.
“I was pleased with what we saw today, first, we walked off the field healthy and that’s what we wanted to do. I’m glad to see our fans back out and us being able to play in front of them was nice,” said Tulsa coach Philip Montgomery. “I was pleased with today, but we’ll learn more as we watch the tape. We wanted to keep if pretty vanilla and we were able to do that. We were able to execute and work on the things that we’ve been working on all spring long.”
Tulsa’s offense had two 100-yard rushers with Anthony Watkins gaining 112 yards and one TD on 13 carries, Christian Lovick had 105 yards and one TD on 14 carries and Deneric Prince scored two touchdowns and gained 74 yards on 15 carries.
Asked about the emphasis the Hurricane has placed on cutting down on penalties, Montgomery said, “We cut down on mistakes but not enough of it. We still had too many areas where we have to be better and more disciplined –– some of it was the flow of the scrimmage, some of it was not focused in enough. You have to have a little bit of rhythm and when you get into that rhythm you’re in a much better spot, we still have work to do, but we’re getting there.”
