The Broken Arrow City Council turned back another proposal for an ordinance that would force residents to wear face masks due to the Chinese coronavirus.

The same ordinance had previously been voted down despite the public criticism from Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum and others.

The proposed Broken Arrow ordinance was similar to the one the Tulsa City Council extended last week through the end of April.

Many believe that the Broken Arrow ordinance would not be legally enforceable. The ordinance called for fines ranging from $75-$750 and could add to possible criminal charges of disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct or trespassing. Critics of the face mask ordinance said is unconstitutional and that wearing a mask can actually damage a person’s health. The motion died due to a 2-2 vote.
