One Democrat and two Republicans – including interim Tulsa County Treasurer John Fothergill – have filed to fill the position left by the retirement of former Tulsa County Treasurer Dennis Semler.

The February 9 election also will have area school board races plus city council elections in Owasso and Sand Springs.

In Tulsa School Board, District 2, the candidates are Judith Barba, Francine Campbell and Theresa Hinman. Board member Jani Wester, the board’s vice president, did not file. Schools in that district include Kendall-Whittier, McKinley, Mitchell, Owen, Sequoyah, and Springdale elementary schools; Carver Middle School and Rogers College Middle School; and Rogers College and Booker T. Washington high schools.

In the race for Tulsa School Board, Office No. 3, Board Member Jennettie Marshall faces David J. Harris. Schools in Marshall’s district include Academy Central, Anderson, Burroughs, Celia Clinton, Hamilton, Hawthorne, John Hope Franklin, Unity Learning Academy, and Whitman elementary schools; Dual Language Academy; Monroe Demonstration Academy; Central Middle School; and McLain High School.

A host of candidates for area school board races won because they were the only candidates to file.

Julie R. Prox of Broken Arrow was unopposed in the race for Bixby School Board Office No. 1. In Broken Arrow, Steve Allen was elected without opposition in Office No. 1. Michael Pendergrass was elected to the Glenpool School Board without opposition in Office No. 1 and Bill Thayer was also elected in Office No. 4.

Tracy Kennedy was elected to Jenks School Board Office No. 1 without opposition. Al Shasteen was elected in Office No. 1 in Keystone Public Schools. Kim Perner of Mounds was unopposed for the Office No. 1 seat on the Liberty School Board. David Hardie was the only one to file for Office No. 1 of Skiatook Public Schools.

In Owasso, Kyle Davis will face Alvin D. Fruga in Ward 2.

Some city council races were decided because only one candidate filed. Owasso Vice Mayor Kelly Lewis won the Ward 1 City Council seat without opposition.

In the filings for Sand Springs City Council, Councilor Beau Wilson (Ward 5), Brian Jackson (Ward 6) and Mayor Jim Spoon (at-large) were elected because they were the only ones to file.

A board of education primary is set for February 9 if two or more candidates file for a specific office.  A candidate who gets 50% plus one vote will win the election and if no one gets that many, the top two vote getters advance to the general election on April 6. If only two candidates file, they will appear only on the April 6 ballot.
