The Republican National Committee voted to censure U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyoming, and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Illinois, because they chose to sit on the Democrat kangaroo court “investigating” the January 6, 2021, protests at the U.S. Capitol. The resolution states that the Republican Party “will no longer support them as members of the Republican Party.”
Good.
Some national Republicans finally showed some backbone.
Cheney and Kinzinger, neo-cons who despise former President Trump on a personal level, both voted to impeach Trump at the end of his term. They were the only two Republicans who agreed to sit on the panel after Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to seat the true Republicans named by their caucus.
It could have been worse, The initial resolution called for Cheney and Kinzinger to be kicked out of the House Republican conference.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy dropped Cheney from her position of leadership in the GOP caucus last spring. Kinzinger is not running for re-election in 2022 – mostly because his actions have not been popular in his home district.
Cheney and Kinzinger fired back, claiming the GOP leaders were “hostages” to Trump. Cheney describes herself as a “constitutional conservative” but that is not how she acts or governs. Trump has endorsed Wyoming lawyer Harriet Hagerman who is challenging Cheney in the August GOP primary.
In November, the Wyoming GOP voted to no longer to recognize Cheney as a Republican.
Cheney and Kinzinger are living a lie. They need to change their registration from Republican to Democrat or Independent and stop masquerading as Republicans.
This should be a signal across the country to Republican officials who act like liberal Democrats.
