Charley Young Event Park, also known as CYEP, received the 2018 Great Public Space Award from the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Planning Commission.
The five award winners were recognized at the 2018 Annual State Planning Conference.
CYEP in the heart of Downtown Bixby has roots dating back to the 1920’s. The redesign of the historic park included the addition of pedestrian and bike facilities, street-scaping on the park’s perimeters, wayfinding signage and increased landscaping. The Charley Young Event Park flagpole was preserved as a park centerpiece. The flagpole was originally at Armstrong Street and Dawes Ave. The piece was erected during World War I in the center of Downtown Bixby and removed in 1980 until it was placed in Charley Young Event Park downtown in 1986.
Charley Young Event Park, designed by Planning Design Group and constructed by Atlas General Contractors, opened in May 2017 with funding through Vision2025 allocations.
Since the park’s unveiling, it has hosted a variety of free public events and community gatherings including the Bixby Farmer’s Market, Back to School Bash, concerts, Movies in the Park, Friday Food Fest and more.
