OSU GETS HOME WIN AGAINST ASU
Leading from start to finish, the Oklahoma State Cowboys defeated Arizona State, 86-73, Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
OSU improved to 12-11, 4-8 Big 12, and ASU dropped to 12-11, 3-9 Big 12. Oklahoma State leads the all-time series 6-3, but it was the teams’ first meeting since 1997.
Jamyron Keller led the Cowboys with 14 points, while five of his teammates had 10 points each; Arturo Dean, Robert Jennings, Khalil Brantley, Brandon Newman and Patrick Suemnick.
“It was a very odd game and when you look across the stat sheet, you see where we made and shot the exact number of free throws,” said OSU head coach Steve Lutz. “You just don’t see games like this very often.”
Each team made 22-of-26 free throws. OSU shot 43.8 percent from the field while the Sun Devils shot 33.3 percent.
The Cowboys led 43-33 at halftime and extended their lead to 19 points early in the second half. Later in the half, ASU pulled within seven points of OSU, 71-64, but the Cowboys maintained at least an eight-point lead the rest of the way.
Alston Mason led Arizona State with a season-high 25 points, while Joson Sanon scored 17, Amier Ali 12 with 10 rebounds, and Basheer Jihad had 10 points.
OSU will host Texas Tech Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
TENNESSEE CRUSHES OU
Tennessee was nearly perfect from the start and cruised to a 70-52 win over the Oklahoma Sooners, Saturday in Norman. It was the first time these two teams have met in 56 years.
The fourth-ranked Volunteers (20-4, 7-4 Southeastern Conference) made 15 of their first 17 field goals, including 5 for 5 from 3-point range, and led by as many as 22 at one point in the first half. Tennessee closed out the first half with a 45-25 lead.
The Volunteers shot 69.2 percent from the field in the first half and 60 percent for the game.
The Sooners battled back in the second half, as Tennessee committed five fouls in the first 3:30 of the second half to give OU six free throws, all were made, and the Sooners cut the Vols lead to 49-34 with 16:33 left.
OU outscored the Volunteers 27-25 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the large halftime deficit.
Chaz Lanier led Tennessee with a game-high 21 points, five rebounds and two in the first conference matchup between the two schools. Zakai Zeigler added 17.
For the Sooners (16-7, 3-7 SEC), only one player finished in double figures; Jalon Moore scored 12 points, Bryce Goodine added nine, and Jeremiah Fears scored eight points.
Oklahoma entered the day leading the SEC in free throw percentage and shot a perfect 12 of 12 from the foul line, while shooting 32.1 percent from the field.
Oklahoma is home to take on LSU on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
ORU LOSES HEARTBREAKER
In a back-and-forth game of runs, South Dakota emerged with a slim one-point win over the ORU Golden Eagles, 75-74, Saturday night at the Mabee Center.
The two teams were tied 13-13 with 11:32 to play, when South Dakota went on an 8-2 run. The Coyotes were able to stretch their lead to 11 points with 4:30 remaining, but the Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 10-2 run and cut the deficit to four.
ORU opened the second half on a 10-4 run to take a 40-38 lead and South Dakota called a timeout to stop the Golden Eagles momentum. In the final 16 minutes of play, neither team was able to grow a lead of more than six points.
In the end, it boiled down to free throws and Chase Forte knocked down the game-winning free throw for South Dakota with three seconds left to bring his team to victory.
Issac McBride led ORU with 24 points, JoJo Moore added 12 points and 7 rebounds, Darius Robinson Jr. 11 points, and Luke Gray had eight points with 13 rebounds.
South Dakota was led by Forte with 14 points and 8 rebounds, Paul Bruns had 11 points and 8 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 44.4 percent from the field and 66.7 percent (12-18) from the free throw line. ORU had 16 turnovers, while USD only had seven. The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Coyotes 45-37.
ORU will play at North Dakota State Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m. and visit North Dakota on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
TULSA DROPS HOME LOSS TO FAU
Florida Atlantic controlled the game throughout, while the Tulsa offense struggled in a 79-55 loss on Legends Day at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Saturday.
The Golden Hurricane lost their fourth straight and dropped to 9-15 overall, 3-8 in The American. FAU improved to 13-10, 6-4 AAC.
Florida Atlantic took the lead with 15:50 to play in the first half and never looked back. The Owls led Tulsa by 18 at halftime, 40-22.
Tulsa shot just 31.7 percent from the field, the team’s second lowest shooting performance of the season. Tulsa shot a meager 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range.
The Owls shot 50 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) on 3-pointers. FAU scored 18 points off 10 TU turnovers in the game.
Tyshawn Archie led TU in scoring for the second straight game with 11 points. Dwon Odom and Braeden Carrington each scored 10. Ian Smikle was Tulsa’s top rebounder, pulling down seven boards.
FAU was led by Baba Miller’s 17-point, 10-rebound double-double. Kaleb Green and Matas Vokietaitis each scored 11, and Ken Evans Jr. added 10.
Tulsa will host UTSA on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
