Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham came through in the clutch Saturday as the Cowboys defeated No. 6 Texas 75-57 in double overtime in Stillwater.

Kalib Boone paced No, 23 OSU (12-5, 5-5 in the Big 12) with 22 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks while Cunningham had 19 points. Cunningham made just 5 of 22 shots from the field and committed six turnovers  but he scored five crucial points on the overtime.

“The most important thing for me is that he still took 22 shots, because that’s what really good players do,” said OSU coach Mike Boynton. “You got to understand, he doesn’t play for his percentages, he certainly would have rather shot better, but for the most part tried to take the right shots. He played in attack mode.

“I thought there were a few times, especially early in the second half, where he was trying to drive into the lane and got close, I thought maybe he was pumped up a spot and maybe didn’t necessarily get the call, but I was glad that he stuck with that aggressive mentality throughout the game and obviously stepped up late and made some huge shots and free throws for us.”

People are projecting that Cunningham, a true freshman, will be the first pick in the NBA Draft when he chooses to leave.

“A 19-year-old, really-talented dude who is still figuring it out,” Boynton said.

“I have to keep reminding myself, because I want him to make the right play all the time too, right? I want him to make all the shots that he makes, and I want him to make all the right passes at the right time, but college defenses are a little bit different. The spacings a little bit different and he’s still adapting to how people guard him in those situations.”

Cunningham understands his role.

“I know at the end of the game the team wants the ball to be in my hands, and I try to make plays,” Cunningham said. “I’m not going to shy away from the moment even if the time before didn’t go right and things like that. I feel like that would be cheating my team.”

OSU lost to Kansas, 66-78, Monday night in Lawrence.

OSU had their January 16 game at home against OU postponed until February 25 and their January 19 game at West Virginia postponed indefinitely.
