There is a state wide Petition to put a Constitutional Amendment to raise Minimum Wage on the ballot. The people asking you to sign this say it just puts it before the people for them to decide. What they are not telling you is what you would actually be voting on.
First it would be part of the Oklahoma Constitution, something not easily changed, it cannot be amended as a bill could be by the legislature.
Secondly, it would bring minimum wage to $12 an hour in 2024, which is virtually what it is, even Walmart hires people for more than that, McDonalds starts around $11.28/hour.
It would raise the minimum wage by $1.50 a year until 2029 when it would be $15/hour. Who knows what the economy will do in the next 5 years, a lot will depend on who wins the next presidential election.
After that increases beyond $15 an hour would be tied to the federal consumer price index. Do we really want this to be tied in to national prices and have no state control? Oklahoma has a lower cost of living than most states do.
It would be far better to have local control on this issue, since we do not share the same cost of living as New York City or California. Why not let the Oklahoma economy choose the wages for Oklahoma.
