America’s progressive media goes out of its way to divert attention from the real meaning of Christmas.

The real meaning is that God loved us so much that He sent His Son to be born of a virgin, live a perfect life and to die on the cross for our sins. Jesus Christ rose from the dead and now sits at the right hand of God, constantly pleading our case.

Here are some examples of how mass media distorts that message.

The movie Four Christmases, starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, portrays an unmarried couple that must endure four different Christmas scenarios that completely fail to portray any sense of the Christmas season.

Another Vince Vaughn movie, Fred Claus, pushes the idea that Christmas is strictly about Santa Claus and he is a seriously flawed character.

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in Jingle All the Way. This movie lampoons materialism as two fathers believe they cannot have a successful Christmas without a specific toy for their children.

Steve Martin stars in Mixed Nuts. He manages a suicide prevention hotline and the cast includes a transvestite.

Deck the Halls, starring Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick, is a mean-spirited story that is completely out of touch with Christmas.

Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman, 2000, is terrible on many fronts. First, this kind of slasher movie should not have any connection to Christmas. Producers make Christmas movies on the hopes that they will be shown over and over again (see Die Hard) so they can collect more residuals. This is just an evil film.

These are just a few of the terrible Christmas movies.

Television generally makes a point of not mentioning Jesus in its shows and even their news programs. In the name of inclusiveness, they promote false religions, humanism, secularism, materialism and even socialism without pointing any viewers to Christ.

This philosophical shift from Christianity has its roots in public education which has scratched references to Jesus Christ from the public classoom. You can’t formally pray in schools (even before a football game). You can’t teach the Bible’s account of Christmas. And pity poor teacher that tries to tell a personal story of faith in Christ in the context of Scripture.

Children are taught that the meaning of Christmas is peace on Earth, kindness, generosity, family, etc. All of these things can be good but they miss the mark.

They focus on the attributes of Christianity but not the Author.

Here are the hard facts. If you don’t trust Jesus to be your Savior, you are missing out on having a relationship now and you will miss going to be with Him in Heaven when you pass away.

Please don’t let that happen to you.

I am not saying that there isn’t any cultural benefit from the trappings of Christmas. There’s no Biblical instruction to put up a Christmas tree and there’s no harm if you do. Obviously, Christmas is a good time to patch up and strengthen family relations. And God bless you if you have a giving spirit and help others during Christmas. That should not be discouraged.

And any child would light up when opening presents on Christmas morning. There is nothing inherently bad about generously sharing gifts.

We just need to remember the “Reason for the season” and that is for men and women to reconcile with a Savior who loved us so much that He gave Himself to save us.

Making the decision to trust Jesus will truly make this a merry Christmas. The Bible says that the angels in Heaven rejoice when even one person trusts Christ.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!
